Ala Moana Beach Park

The busy beach where Hurley and Libby had their picnic (“Everybody Loves Hugo,” Ep. 6×12), and where Desmond spied on them from the road, was the west end of Ala Moana Beach Park, one of the largest parks in urban Honolulu managed by the City & County of Honolulu.

Pōka‘ī Bay Beach Park

The remote island of Sumba in Indonesia, where the “Oceanic Six” supposedly returned to civilization (“There’s No Place Like Home,” Ep. 4×12), was actually Pōka‘ī Bay in Wai‘anae.

Makua Beach

The second to the last stretch of sand before Kaena Point, near the end of Farrington Highway on the westernmost edge of O‘ahu, Makua Beach is among the most remote locations used by “LOST.” It’s where the base of Jacob’s statue was built (“The Incident,” Ep. 5×16, “LA X,” Ep. 6×01). The rocky outcrop is known as Pōhaku Kula‘ila‘i, a sacred spot in Hawaiian lore, and also as “Pray for Sex” rock.

Ala Wai Harbor

The Ala Wai Harbor (also known as the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor or the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor) is the setting of several “LOST” scenes. It is the marina where Boone confronts Shannon’s boyfriend and attempts to pay him off (”Hearts and Minds,” Ep. 1×13). It is also the marina where Charlie caused Desmond to crash his car into the water (“Happily Ever After,” Ep. 6×11). And the same area is also the backdrop for the iconic photo of Desmond and Penny (“Flashes Before Your Eyes,” Ep. 3×08). Note the twin towers of the Hawaii Prince Hotel visible in the background.

Police Beach

Police Beach is among the most iconic and most used locations on “LOST.” It’s the home of the survivors’ beach camp as seen beginning halfway through the first season through season six. The shore itself, like all beaches in Hawaii, is open to the public, but the set becomes private property at the vegetation line. There is often signage and temporary fencing marking the nebulous property line.

Getting There

The only way the public can reach the Police Beach set is by walking along the beach from either Haleiwa Beach Park to the west or Papailoa Beach to the east. I recommend the latter. Turn onto Papailoa Road from Kamehameha Highway. About 800 feet down this dead-end residential street, there will be a dirt parking area on the left, across from a “public right-of-way” access path to the beach on the right. Park there, walk down the access path to the beach, then head left or west along the shore about 1,000 feet.
